SKM (Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia) is Malaysia’s government-recognised vocational qualification for beauty professionals, regulated by JPK under the Ministry of Human Resources. Available from Level 1 (basic) to Level 3 (advanced), it is required by many salons for legal compliance, essential for registering a beauty business, and preferred by Malaysian employers — making it the foundation certificate for any local beauty career.
Yes. In Malaysia, SKM-certified staff are generally required to operate a licensed beauty salon (Pusat Kecantikan). The certificate demonstrates regulatory compliance, meets JPK standards, and is often required for business insurance and local authority approval. Having SKM-qualified practitioners also builds client trust and salon credibility — making it a practical and legal necessity for aspiring salon owners.
The government SKM programme is restricted to Malaysian citizens. However, international students have a strong alternatives: the TQUK International Diploma (UK-accredited, recognised in 50+ countries). Available at Skin Renew Academy and open to students from all nationalities.
Malaysian citizens aged 16–35 pursuing SKM vocational qualifications may apply for PTPK (Perbadanan Tabung Pembangunan Kemahiran) financial assistance. To apply, you must be enrolled at a JPK-accredited training provider like Skin Renew Academy. The academy’s admissions team can guide you through the PTPK application process and advise on additional funding options such as HRD Corp levy claims.
The SKM beauty course covers practical and theoretical training in: facial skincare and treatment, skin anatomy and physiology, makeup application, nail care, hygiene and safety protocols, customer service, and beauty business fundamentals.
